Essential Travel Information

Everything you need to know for a smooth and memorable journey through Japan.

Currency & Payments

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is the official currency. While credit cards are increasingly accepted, cash remains essential, especially in rural areas and small establishments. ATMs at 7-Eleven and post offices accept international cards.

Transportation

The Japan Rail Pass offers excellent value for intercity travel. Within cities, IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) simplify subway and bus rides. Taxis are safe but expensive—ride-sharing apps have limited availability.

Etiquette & Customs

Remove shoes when entering homes and certain restaurants. Bowing is customary but handshakes are accepted. Avoid loud conversations on public transport. Tipping is not practiced and can even cause confusion.

Safety & Health

Japan is one of the safest countries globally with low crime rates. Tap water is safe to drink. Travel insurance is recommended. English-speaking medical facilities are available in major cities.

Language

Japanese is the official language. English signage is common in tourist areas, but learning basic phrases enhances your experience. Download translation apps like Google Translate with camera functionality for menus.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) for cherry blossoms; Autumn (September–November) for fall foliage. Summer offers festivals but brings heat and humidity. Winter provides excellent skiing and fewer crowds.
